Divya Bharti. The name has been reduced to just a story, a theory, and a speculation now. But before all this, 26 years ago, when she debuted in Bollywood she instantly became the leading lady of the Hindi film industry. Her first film was Vishwatma opposite, Sunny Deol in 1992. She was merely 18 at that time. But she swept the entire nation with her ethereal beauty and innocent face. Not only that, she was immensely talented as well. She was very soon declared as a major threat to other Bollywood leading ladies of that time by the media.
Having debuted in the south Indian film industry in 1990 and acted in many regional films, her Bollywood debut film didn’t do well at the box-office but her iconic song SaatSamundar earned many accolades from the audience. So much so that the song is considered a cult classic to date.
She then went on to sign many films. In her short career of only 3 years, she had acted in 21 films. If sources are to be believed, it is said that she had 30 more films already lined up for her!
It is said that you are more likely to meet your life partner at your workplace or at the place of your profession. And that was very much true for Divya Bharti.
Divya was shooting for her second film ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ starring opposite her was superstar Govinda. Sajid, on the other hand, had just started his independent home production with the film, Zulm Ki Hukumat. Interestingly, both the films, Shola Aur Shabnam and Zulm Ki Hukumat starred Govinda. And hence the shooting schedule overlapped.
One day Sajid thought of casually visiting the sets of Shola Aur Shabnam to meet Govinda. He would have never thought that that casual visit would turn into something so crucial for him. He met first laid his eyes on Divya there and for the 26-year-old filmmaker; it was love at first sight.
After their first meeting, Sajid made sure to visit Divya’s sets almost every day. They started off as friends at first. But as they started to spend more and more time with each other, they developed feelings for each other.
They kept on seeing each other in secret. There were a lot of issues that would work against their relationship. Their different religious background, Sajid wasn’t fully established and Divya had just started her career. But despite all that, the two got married in 1992 after Divya turned 18. They tied the nuptial knot on May 10, 1992. According to sources, it was a court marriage and Divya converted to Islam and changed her name to Sana Nadiadwala.
Even though they got married, they decided to keep their relationship under wraps. The industry people speculated that there was something going on between the two. But no one had a clue about their marriage.
Then came the end of a short but beautiful love story. On April 5, 1993, Divya accidentally died after falling off from her building. Her death led to many conspiracy theories, and it still remains a mystery. No one really knows what went down on that fateful night.
Sajid was devastated after her death. Till many years after her death, Sajid dedicated his movies to Divya. After many years, he married Warda Khan, a journalist. In an interview, Warda revealed that he still keeps Divya’s photo in his wallet.
It is extremely saddening that Divya and Sajid were married for only 10 months.
Their marriage and love story was pure and sacred.
